Important Information
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
The start date of the rental determines the price. Prices are quoted per day and hire periods are calculated on a 24 hour basis, e.g. if a car is collected at 3pm on a Saturday for one week’s hire, it must be returned the following Saturday by 3pm. If your car is returned later than the time specified on your Rental Agreement, you will be charged for an extra day's hire.
Driver Indentification: drivers must produce a full, current driving licence held for a minimum of one year, if not in English then accompanied by an accurate translation and an International Drivers’ Permit. For those in possession of the 2 part UK licences both the photocard and paper counterpart are required. Holders of an old style British licence should carry photo identification with them at all times.
Loss Damage Waiver: damage to the rental car (except damage to the overhead, undercarriage, tyres and wheel hubs) and 3rd party liability insurance cover including property damage (up to levels governed by state legislation) is included up to AU$ 30 million. An excess of AU $2,750 will apply, but can be reduced to AU $385 when purchasing the Excess Reduction Insurance. This costs AU $22 per day locally. Car groups K & W are subject to an excess of AU $5,500 which can be reduced to AU $1,100 by paying AU $33 per day locally. These are including GST. Alternatively, you can pre-pay the Excess Reduction Insurance with our Inclusive Plus Prices and save money - see Inclusive Plus section under Vehicle Notes.

AVIS ONE WAY POLICY
Continuous rentals of 72 hours or more generally do not incur a one way drop fee. Please see below for details and exceptions:
Group X cars: may not be rented on a one way basis.
Queensland: no one way fees apply for rentals between Cairns & Port Douglas and between Gold Coast, Brisbane & Sunshine Coast, regardless of duration.
Tasmania: no one way fees apply within Tasmania. Rentals into/out of Tasmania are not permitted.
Western Australia: one way rentals within Western Australia are subject to variable drop fees and vehicle availability.
Into/out of Western Australia & Northern Territory: only car groups C, D, E, F & W may be driven one way into/out of Western Australia & Northern Territory from/to all states (except Tasmania). This is only permitted between major airport and downtown locations during the dry months from April to November. Rentals must be 3 days or more and a one way fee of AU$ 800 will apply.
One way fees for 1 to 2 day rentals: vary between locations. Please ask for details.
DRIVING AREAS
General Information: vehicles can only be driven on roads which are mapped, properly constructed as a sealed, metalled or gravel road and cannot be driven on beaches or through streams, rivers or floodwaters or be taken on a ferry. Vehicles rented on mainland Australia may not leave the mainland and be taken to Tasmania, or any other island. Please discuss your driving route with Avis upon collection of your vehicle.
Queensland: vehicles can only be driven on the main road to Cape Tribulation and may not be driven further north, except All Wheel Drives & 4WD vehicles which may be driven as far as Cooktown on mapped roads only. Vehicles may not be driven beyond Chillagoe in a westerly direction, beyond Normanton in a southerly direction or on the Birdsville Track. Vehicles cannot be taken to Fraser Island.
Tasmania, Victoria, New South Wales, ACT: vehicles may not be driven above the snow line between June & September (Jindabyne in New South Wales & Bright in Victoria). Vehicles rented in Tasmania may not be taken to the mainland or to Bruny Island.
South Australia: vehicles may not be driven on the Oodnadatta track or taken to Kangaroo Island.
Northern Territory & Western Australia: there are a number of roads in Western Australia and Northern Territory that are access roads to Aboriginal communities; please note driving is not permitted in these areas without an approved permit. It is also essential that you advise Avis on collection if you are planning to drive through the Northern Territory or Western Australia as additional insurance may be required (only car groups E & F permitted and April - November). Vehicles may not be driven on the Jim Jim Falls & Twin Falls Roads (Kakadu) or the Gibb River Road (Kimberley). Vehicles rented in Western Australia south of Exmouth may not be driven north of Exmouth. Travel north on Geraldton on any road other than main highways 1 and 96 north of Geraldton is not recommended. Mine access roads in the Pilbara are private and cannot be driven on.
Please note: all insurance cover will be void if driving restrictions are not adhered to.
THE RIGHT CAR FOR YOU
It is important to book the right car according to your needs and party size. A smaller vehicle may be fine for a city stay but a larger, more powerful vehicle with ample space to store all of your luggage out of sight will be better for a self drive holiday. It is important to consider that luggage space will be greatly reduced if all seats are occupied and not as shown above.
Upgrading: it is more convenient and cheaper to do this in advance. If you have booked and paid for a particular car type in advance and on arrival you are offered ‘an upgrade’, which you decide to take, you will be required to pay extra for it. You would also pay more for the upgrade locally than if you had booked this originally.
Please note: all insurance coverage will be void should Avis' Terms & Conditions as stated in your Rental Agreement be violated. Please ensure that you have read & understood the terms and charges (if applicable) that have been applied to your Rental Agreement prior to leaving the Avis location. The additional charges quoted in AU$ are payable locally, subject to Goods & Services Tax (10%) unless otherwise indicated, Administration Fee/State Stamp Duty (3.5%) & a Concession Recovery Fee (up to 20% depending on airport location). Charges are subject to change by Avis at any time.
