CAR HIRE IN NEW ZEALAND

IMPORTANT INFORMATION
The start date of the rental determines the price. Prices are quoted per day and hire periods are calculated on a 24 hour basis, e.g. if a car is collected at 3pm on a Saturday for one week’s hire, it must be returned the following Saturday by 3pm. If your car is returned later than the time specified on your rental agreement, you will be charged for an extra day's hire. Minimum hire period is 3 days per island.

Driver Indentification: the minimum age for hire of all vehicles is 21 years and all drivers must produce a full, current driving licence held for a minimum of one year. If not in English, it must be accompanied by an accurate translation or an International Driving Permit. Additional drivers are free, however must be registered on the rental agreement.

Motor Vehicle Insurance: is included for damage to the rental vehicle, 3rd party liability insurance cover and property damage up to NZ$ 5 million. An excess of NZ$ 2,500 (NZ$ 3,000 from 1 Apr 10) applies for car groups A - E and NZ$ 3,000 (NZ$ 3,750 from 1 Apr 10) for car groups F - W. If you purchase Excess Reduction Insurance locally the excess is reduced to NZ$ 225 (zero windscreen damage excess) for NZ$ 24 per day for car groups A-E and NZ$ 27 per day for car groups F - W. Alternatively, you can pre-pay the Excess Reduction Insurance with our Inclusive Plus Prices and save money - see Inclusive Plus Prices section under Vehicle Notes.

ADDITIONAL CHARGES
Deposit: all rentals are subject to a deposit at the time of vehicle collection to cover miscellaneous/optional charges and the applicable insurance excess. A NZ$ 150 fuel deposit is also taken and refunded at the end of the rental if you return the vehicle with the same amount of fuel as on collection. Deposit payments must be made by valid credit card.

Airport/Ferry Concession Recovery Fee: a local fee of NZ$ 30 (NZ$ 35 from 1 Apr 10) per hire is payable if you collect or return your hire car from/to an airport or ferry terminal depot (included in Inclusive Plus Prices). Avis have downtown locations in the main cities which we recommend you use rather than picking up from airport locations.

One Way Hires: they must be confirmed in advance and from 1 Apr 10 a fee of NZ$ 50 is payable locally for rentals of 6 days or less. A minimum hire period of 5 days applies for car groups F - W.

Child seats: required by law in New Zealand for children aged 4 & under, cost NZ$ 13 per day plus GST (max NZ $65 per rental plus GST) and must be requested at time of booking. Seats are suitable for children weighing 9 to 19.5 kilos (approx 1 - 4 years). Families travelling with newborn infants under 1 year must provide their own seat.

Country Locations: a surcharge of NZ$ 50 is applicable for all pickups in Greymouth, Hokitika, Westport and Gisborne. From 1 Apr 10, a fee of NZ$ 30 applies to Kerikeri locations.

Driving Areas: there is no insurance cover to vehicles driven on unformed roads (i.e. dirt or farm roads and including beaches). These include - North Island: Ninety Mile Beach in The Bay of Islands. South Island: Skippers Road near Queenstown. Tasman Valley Road, where you may drive to Mount Cook village, The Hermitage, but no further
.

THE RIGHT CAR FOR YOU
It is important to book the right car according to your needs and party size. A smaller vehicle may be fine for a city stay but a larger, more powerful vehicle with ample space to store all of your luggage out of sight will be better for a self drive holiday. It is important to consider that luggage space will be greatly reduced if all seats are occupied and not as shown above.

Upgrading: it is more convenient and cheaper to do this in advance. If you have booked and paid for a particular car type in advance and on arrival you are offered ‘an upgrade’, which you decide to take, you will be required to pay extra for it. You would also pay more for the upgrade locally than if you had booked this originally.

Please note: all insurance coverage will be void should Avis' Terms & Conditions as stated in your Rental Agreement be violated. Please ensure that you have read & understood the terms and charges (if applicable) that have been applied to your Rental Agreement prior to leaving the Avis location. The additional charges mentioned in the Important Information section quoted in NZ$ are payable locally and are subject to Goods & Services Tax (currently 12.5%) unless otherwise indicated.
